  • Trump has turned press conferences into a ritual of hate -- is it still worth watching?Become a member of the Vox Video Lab! http://bit.ly/video-labSubscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjOThe White House press conference has always been a frustrating spectacle, with reporters trying to pry information from government officials who do everything in their power to avoid sharing too much information. But these press conferences are typically appreciated because of their symbolic value -- they reaffirm the democratic idea that the government must answer to the people. That symbolic value has changed under Trump, who uses press conferences to stage high profile fights with the press and mobilize his base.On Strikethrough, Vox producer Carlos Maza explores the challenges facing the news media in the age of Trump. The fact that we consider anyone “winning” or losing a press conference or any political argument shows we have become too partisan and the largest percentage of that responsibility falls on the media. There is little to no difference between political coverage and the coverage of a sporting event these days. The only big difference is sports fan are less hostile to one another...sadly.

As I am from Germany I might be able to give different perspective on this.
The press conferences are organized quite different in Germany. First it is organized as an association composed of different news outlets and they decide who they invite to question, they decide what to put on the agenda and who should ask the next question. Usually there is not only the main press secretary but press secretaries from different ministries to answer specific questions. It is also no uncommon for the invited to hand out written statements. They are quite lengthy as well. Usually about 45 min to an hour. Regarding cameras it is not common to show the journalists. This takes away a lot of the drama.
On the downside they are really boring and not many people like to watch them.

I find it hilarious how most comments are comments that talk about the comments section

Why does Fox News call CNN the "mainstream media" when Fox News is the #1 news network on cable? Isn't #1 automatically "mainstream?"

Trump always wins press conferences because he hogs the good controller and everyone else has to use the MadCatz one every time

Sarah Sanders trashes those WH correspondents like no other press secretary ever before. I remember simpler days when Sean Spicer just use to hide in bushes to avoid questions 😂

Eric Bischoff did a Ted Talk on this. News/Politics (they're on the same team) is a giant wrestling pay-per view now. It's designed to make you angry or reaffirm your beliefs but NEVER to make you think. Cheer for your wrestler and put your credit card # down, or in this instance, vote and pay your taxes.

Americans are addicted to entertainment. They can't resist. If Americans aren't entertained 24/7 they get bored.
That's why reality stars live in million dollar mansions and one of them is their president.

Our government is so far removed from "we the people", that is seems likely our Constitutional Democracy is truly in peril.
What we need is complete and absolute truth regarding every last thing our government has done "in our name" from its inception up to today. Hold nothing back, let us know what these representatives of "we the people" have been doing in our name. Only then can we truly hold the crooks accountable and start to fix this mess.

He wins because he plays to his base, sticks to what he knows and ACTUALLY speaks like a person. Everyone else has been too busy riding the hate train to be even remotely competitive in any other arena besides Trump-hating.
